Plant Description and Operating Era

The Fostoria plant was Kaylo Plant #1 — the original Kaylo asbestos-cement pipe insulation manufacturing site, opened by Owens-Illinois in the late 1940s to produce the newly commercialized Kaylo hydrous-calcium-silicate insulation. Owens-Illinois transferred the Kaylo product line and the Fostoria works to Owens-Corning in 1958. Under Owens-Corning, Fostoria continued as a lead Kaylo production facility until the company allegedly ceased using asbestos in Kaylo in 1972. The site is a documented anchor of the Kaylo litigation record.
